There is a story about waking up in your room in the dark hours of the
morning with only the streetlight outside for company. There is a story
of a rabbit falling down a mole's burrow, losing its sight and developing
magical hearing powers. But was the rabbit a girl all along? Welcome to
the tales of Laura Jean, where the fantastical is earthed by the painful
beauty of everyday life. Where strange lyrical concepts, such as a deer
in the ribs instead of a heart, are accompanied by imagined chords and
timings, intricately crafted.
Laura Jean has been gracing Australian stages for many years. Invitations
to share them have come from overseas artists such as Richard Buckner,
M. Ward, Faun Fables, Okkervil River, Midlake, Teddy Thompson, Ian Ball
and Australian acts like Augie March, Ben Lee, Claire Bowditch, Machine
Translations, Sarah Blasko, The Drones, and she has toured nationally
with Jen Cloher, New Buffalo and Darren Hanlon.
Her first E.P, 'The Hunter's Ode' (2003) was embraced by community radio
and street press across the country, as well as Triple J. The title track
is apparently still sometimes heard late at night. After securing an Arts
Victoria recording grant in July 2004, Laura's vision for her debut album
became closer to reality... Chamber orchestras don't come cheap! 'I'm
a Rabbit, I'm a Fox' was the first single from the album 'Our Swan Song',
which proved popular on community radio Australia wide and had high rotation
on JJJ for many months. Wally Gunn, the composer and arranger of all orchestral
instruments for the recordings used clarinet, oboe and bassoon in 'I'm
a Rabbit, I'm a Fox' to evoke the spirit of 'Peter and The Wolf' and 'Watership
Down'.
'Our Swan Song', her debut L.P. was released in May 2006 to much critical
acclaim, enough for The Age newspaper to name Laura 'Ms. Next Big Thing'
for 2007 (Guy Blackman, EG end of year edition). After having her song
'I'm a Rabbit, I'm a Fox' being aired on BBC2 early this year by fan Gary
Lightbody (Snow Patrol) to a great audience response, along with recording
her next album 'Eden Land' for Cooperative Music/V2 for release in the
UK and Europe, it looks like 2007 will be a big year for Laura Jean. |
